While you may have to physically be away from many friends and family at the moment, this doesn’t mean you can’t stay connected.
Human connectivity, even from a distance, can create a sense of unity and help to keep positive through difficult times. Luckily, you can keep yourself virtually connected to loved ones thanks to smartphones and apps.
Here are some apps that can bring you closer to your friends and family, even from afar.
Houseparty has been helping many people around the globe get through this quarantine period. A social networking video chat app, it lets you connect with up to eight friends at once; you can play games, quizzes or just have a good old chat. Much like the old chat room days, you can join friend’s conversations if they aren’t locked, and be notified when friends come online.
Houseparty is available for iOS, Android, Mac and PC.
If you’re looking to connect with more than eight people at once, Zoom lets you house up to 100 people with its basic free plan. While you may be using Zoom for business conference calls, it works just as well for play too.
From virtual dinners, to birthday parties, knock-off drinks, game nights and sweat sessions, Zoom is the perfect platform to host mega get-togethers. Simply create a meeting and send an invite to your friends and family. Don’t forget to make a custom background!
Zoom is available for iOS, Android, Mac and PC.
Sick of chatting? Get stuck into Draw Something – a Pictionary-style app. Play games with friends and family by getting them to guess what you’re drawing, and exchange sketches with loved ones to let them know you’re thinking about them. Apps like these are also a great way to connect with little ones, or to get them to connect with other friends too. Just wiggle your finger to get drawing – stick figures and doodles encouraged.
Draw Something is available for iOS and Android.
While quarantining can involve a good amount of Netflix-binging, you can get your friends and family on board by hosting long distance movie nights with Netflix Party. Simply log in, choose your movie or show of the evening, and share your party URL with your movie buddies. The app synchronises your video playback and even adds a group chat to your party where you can upload screenshots, emojis and GIFs while you watch together.
Netflix Party is only available on Chrome browsers on desktop or laptop computers.
Just because you’re social distancing doesn’t mean you can’t socialise. Seamlessly integrating with Spotify, JQBX lets you host music parties with friends. Be the DJ for the evening and put on your favourite playlist for your loved ones to boogie to, listen in with friends or even invite strangers to your party. Song requests? Put it down in the group chat.
JQBX is available for iOS, Android, Mac and PC.
While staying connected online with friends and family is essential, it’s also important to balance this with good smart phone habits and stay in touch with yourself during this time.
