Find your fitness personality
If you ever took those “What kind of friend are you?” quizzes in old-school magazines (don’t pretend you didn’t), you’re going to love this throwback. If that era missed you – no stress! Think of this as a quick, fun way to discover how you actually like to move.
What’s the point, you ask? Knowing your fitness personality helps you:
- train in a way that feels natural
- stay motivated without forcing it, and
- pick workouts you’ll keep showing up for.
Ready? Grab a pen, or just point at the screen as we all do now.
Take the fitness personality quiz
For each question, choose the answer that feels most like you.
1. Your ideal workout vibe
A) Headphones in, world out. Just. Doing. Your. Thing!
B) Give me people, music and high-fives. Teamwork makes the dream work.
C) A chilled mix of movement, sweat and banter.
2. When trying a new class, you…
A) Watch a video first so you know exactly what’s coming.
B) Jump straight in – it’s more fun with a crowd of future friends.
C) Bring a mate; everything is better shared (and witnessed).
3. Your biggest fitness motivation
A) Hitting personal milestones.
B) Feeling connected to a community.
C) Doing something fun enough that it doesn’t feel like “exercise”.
4. Your post-workout ritual
A) A quiet stretch and a moment to recharge.
B) A chat with your class buddies.
C) Grabbing a smoothie with whoever’s keen.
Count your A’s, B’s and C’s – then meet your fitness personality.
The solo strategist (mostly A’s)
AKA: the “I’ve got a plan” type.
You’re independent, intentional and love a good process. Progress lights you up and nothing beats nailing your next milestone. You train best when the focus is yours and the vibe is calm, controlled and distraction-free.
Some exercise routines you can do on your own in the gym include:
- Strength training – free weights and machines: track your sets, reps, and progress.
- Treadmill or rowing intervals: measured pace, noticeable improvements.
- Core circuits: do planks, medicine ball twists, and hanging leg raises for focus and precision.
Or classes that give structure and hit the sweet spot but are on your terms, try:
- Reformer Pilates: technique, structure and that deliciously precise burn.
- Yoga Align, similar to Hatha Yoga, for when you want to switch off the noise and tune into your body.
- Cycle Burn: a dark room, loud beats and zero small talk. Bliss.
And if you’re after some simple body movement and only need a stretch? We have a class just for you.
The community charger (mostly B’s)
AKA: powered by people.
You feed off energy, connection and that “we’re in this together” feeling. A buzzing room, shared sweat and a few high-fives? Instant motivation. You train harder and smile bigger when you’re part of something.
Some group gym activities can be:
- Partner workouts: medicine ball throws, partner resistance exercises.
- Circuit challenges with friends: rotate through machines, rowers, and weight stations.
- Swim laps: race a friend or set shared goals.
Your perfect classes can be:
- Boxing: high energy, high hype, and a room that lifts each other.
- Grid Training: teamwork, sweat and seriously addictive group momentum.
- Yoga Flow (Vinyasa): movement that syncs beautifully with community vibes.
You’re also the type who would absolutely love a sound bath class – a unique group experience that blends stillness with connection. If you’re curious and want to learn more, check out: What is a sound bath class?.
The social sweater (mostly C’s)
AKA: the “let’s make this fun” mover.
You want fitness that feels like hanging out, not ticking a box. You’ll work hard, sure, but only if the vibe is good, the people are better and the workout feels like something you actually want to do.
Workout routines with your besties can be:
- Functional fitness zones: kettlebells, sandbags, TRX movement with some variety and fun.
- Partner machine challenges: friendly competitions on rowers, bikes, or ellipticals.
- Stretch and recovery hangouts: cool down together with foam rollers or yoga mats.
Your best-fit favourites:
- Lift Club: strength, skills and mateship in equal measure.
- Reformer Pilates or Yoga (with a friend): a perfect blend of movement and catch-ups
- Cycle Spirit: functional fitness meets fun energy. You’ll forget you’re even working out.
So, what now?
Understanding your fitness personality can make it easier to choose the workout routines and community fitness classes that will keep you motivated long-term.
Whether you’re a solo strategist, community charger or social sweater, you’ll find a safe, supportive space in any Virgin Active group class. No egos, no judgement – just people with fitness goals, trying their best and having fun while they’re at it.
