Fill your cup before filling others

We've all heard the flight safety announcement: "Put on your oxygen mask before helping others." Yet when it comes to our daily lives, we often forget this crucial wisdom. Learning to fill your cup before pouring into others isn't selfish – it's essential for sustainable wellbeing.

Why do you need to fill your cup first?

Always putting others first stems from seeking external validation rather than trusting your own judgement. People-pleasing is linked to traits such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Due to a lack of self-confidence, people-pleasers have a need for external validation, and they may feel that doing things for others will lead to approval and acceptance.

Think of yourself as a water jug. If you're constantly pouring without refilling, you'll eventually run dry. When we neglect our own needs while caring for everyone else, we're setting ourselves up for burnout.

The power of hobbies for mental health

Here's where things get interesting. Hobbies are both pleasant time-fillers and powerful tools for mental and physical wellbeing. When you engage in activities purely for joy, you're being mindful without even realising it.

Whether it's painting, rock climbing, or learning the ukulele, hobbies create what psychologists call "flow theory". You know, those magical moments where time seems to disappear. These experiences:

  • reduce cortisol levels
  • boost creativity, and
  • give your brain the equivalent of a spa day.

The beauty of hobbies for mental health lies in their complete separation from productivity culture. You don't need to monetise your pottery or become Instagram-famous with your garden. The simple act of nurturing something you love fills your cup in ways that work achievements rarely can.

As explored in our article on journaling for mental health and wellness, having outlets for self-expression is crucial for processing emotions and maintaining perspective.

How to find a new interest that sparks joy

Feeling stuck on where to start? Here's the good news: you don't need to find your "life passion" overnight. Begin with curiosity, not commitment.

Try the "15-minute rule". Just commit to exploring something new for 15 minutes. Browse a craft store, watch YouTube tutorials, or attend a beginner's class. Notice what makes you lean in rather than check the time.

Consider what you loved as a child before anyone told you what was "practical." Did you love building with blocks? Give woodworking a go. Were you always doodling? Pick up that sketchbook again and draw, baby, draw!

Remember our advice about making your wellbeing the ultimate #1 priority? Finding hobbies is part of that commitment. It's an investment in your future self .

The key is treating hobby exploration like dating. Some won't be a match, and that's perfectly fine. Keep experimenting until something clicks.

When you find activities that resonate, apply the principles from our guide on how to make a new habit stick. Start small, be consistent, and celebrate the process rather than perfection.

Your deeper 'why' matters

In our article on why you need a 'why' (and how to find yours), we discussed how understanding your deeper motivations can transform everything. When you know why filling your cup matters to you – whether it's simply feeling human again – mindfulness practices and personal boundaries become non-negotiables rather than nice-to-haves. When you're genuinely fulfilled, you show up as the best version of yourself for everyone around you.
