The benefits of a gym community
Starting to go to the gym can be daunting, especially if you're going in by yourself. But don't worry, about group of likeminded peeps are closer than you think.
Apart asking someone to spot you or bringing a friend, social media can be an excellent tool for connecting with others, on both a global and local scale. Events like virtual workouts, online challenges, fitness forums and groups can help motivate and inspire you on your fitness journey.
Read on to find how to build a gym community, how others can keep you motivated and how long-lasting friendships can improve your mental wellbeing.
A supportive space
Recent studies have shown that having social support while exercising increases enjoyment and motivation to keep going. Virgin Active's Personal Trainers have the skills and expertise to connect you with right members and help you get started.
Getting motivated together
Getting out of bed in the morning is hard. Getting out of bed to go to gym is harder. Research has shown that working out in a group can have a range of benefits such as, keeping you motivated to work out, keeping you accountable to your routine and goals, and can lift your mood.
Working out with a buddy can help you find a motivation you didn’t know existed. You may even be a motivator yourself one day. Can you think of a better way to work towards your fitness goals?
Finding your group and getting fit
If you know you're meeting others at the gym, you'll feel more enthusiastic about going. This is called a social reward; it comes from interacting with others and motivating one another. Simply put, going to gym and feeling good about it will motivate you to go again.
At Virgin Active, we offer a range of opportunities to exercise based on your interests. From yoga to Reformer Pilates, boxing to cycling, we're sure you'll find something that fits your lifestyle - plus, you'll build a community connected by trust, fun, and a whole lot of sweat!
Group fitness activities can help build new relationships, drive motivation, create new experiences, and feel a sense of community as you all work towards your goals. A prime example of this is a Run Club. Run clubs combine all of these benefits into one fun workout - plus, you get outside and enjoy a bit of Vitamin D.
Grid Training is another way to get to know new people. Nothing unites people quite like a shared challenge!
A boost your physical and mental health
We’ve spoken a lot about how the gym is great for building a community, but did you know it’s also excellent for mental health?
Exercising regularly releases chemicals in your brain like endorphins and serotonin, which are scientifically-proven to improve your mood and help you feel great.
Simply being around others at the gym creates new opportunities for social interactions and new experiences. People are social animals, we’re at our best in teams and groups - this is especially true when working out.
