How to Set Health and Fitness Goals (No Scale Needed!)

When it comes to measuring health, many people put a lot of weight (pun intended) on what the scales say. However, your weight doesn’t always give a full picture of your health. 

Every ‘body’ is different. How your weight is distributed and whether you naturally build muscle quickly varies depending on many factors, including gender, age, and ethnicity. 

Muscle is also denser than body fat, meaning a slim and healthy person could potentially weigh more than someone with more body fat. However, the deeper truth is that when you focus too much on your weight as the only goal for exercising, you lose out on what really matters: enjoying moving your body for the benefit of your mind, body and spirit.

Setting goals beyond what the scales say can help you achieve more well-rounded goals. Yes, this could very well include goals for improving your muscle-to-fat ratio and body composition, but you could also set goals that benefit your overall wellbeing, such as improving your mental health through movement, or join a gym to feel a stronger sense of community and belonging.

Plus, health and fitness goals that aren't focused on your weight are often more sustainable long-term. This is because when you treat movement as part of a quality life, rather than only a means to an end (ie a goal weight), the game shifts. The moment you realise that exercise is just as much about a healthy mind as it is about a healthy body, is the moment that exercise becomes a part of your life forever.

At the end of the day, creating realistic, manageable, and, dare we say it, enjoyable health and fitness goals is your best bet at keeping them. And remember, your weight isn’t everything. You can lead a happy, balanced, and healthy life that isn’t bound to numbers on a scale.
