Turning Inward: How To Embrace The Indoors This Winter

by Stephanie Underhill on Tuesday 11 June 2019

If you’re the outdoorsy type, chilly winter weather can certainly put a dampener on things (both figuratively and literally).

But before you go staring out your window with Simon & Garfunkel’s The Sound of Silence playing in the background, take a moment to consider that there’s a lot to celebrate about the indoors too. Here are a few great ways to embrace the indoors this winter and feel great about it.

WRITE AND REFLECT

It’s not uncommon to feel a bit down during the cooler months. Cold, dark weather is known to affect mental health, but you can work towards overcoming this by starting a journal. Journaling has been proven to boost your mood, enhance your overall wellbeing and reduce symptoms of depression. Write about what’s on your mind, start a gratitude journal, or even try a daily sketch journal to boost your mental health.

GET COZY WITH A CUPPA

One of the perks of winter is that it’s the perfect weather for hot drinks! Delicious. Take full advantage of hot beverage weather by trying out some hot herbal teas or inviting your friends over a coffee. You could even visit your Virgin Active Health Club V-Café before or after a workout. Coffee can help to improve your workout, so why not?

REST AND RESET

We’re all for a good snooze, and winter is the best time to make the most of the shorter days and get some extra z’s. Recharge your body by squeezing an extra hour into your sleep routine and embracing the comfort of your bed. Alternatively, pop into your local Virgin Active Health Club during your work lunch break to take advantage of our relaxing sleep pods.

WARM UP WITH A SAUNA

There are plenty of health benefits to spending some time in a sauna. It can improve cardiovascular  performance, aid recovery, flush toxins from your body and help fight illness. Plus, they’re super warm and relaxing! Some Virgin Active Health Clubs have sauna facilities that you can use. Score! So even if your local club doesn’t have one, as a member you can access a club that does.

FIND YOUR INNER SCHOLAR

While time spent inside may feel demotivating, you can use this time to learn something new! Get your head into some books, or check out some podcasts to help your brain stay active. You could even enrol in an online course.

GO OUT (BUT INSIDE)

Staying ‘indoors’ doesn’t have to mean in your house. There are plenty of amazing indoor activities you can do in your local area. Visit an art gallery, see a theatre show, check out the latest museum exhibition, go bowling or even grab some buddies and find a great new brunch spot.

TURN YOUR WORKOUT INTO A WORK-IN

Winter is the perfect time to fully explore your gym and make the most of working out indoors. From the comfort of your local gym, you can try some equipment you haven’t used before, or check out the group classes on offer. Switch your yoga-in-the-park for a Virgin Active Yoga class, or your morning run (in the dark!) for a workout on our high-tech treadmills.

Book a tour of a Virgin Active Health Club to discover all the amazing indoor activities we have on offer for you.
