Cosy and calming things to do by yourself (when it’s cold outside)

The colder months might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s actually a great time of year to unwind alone at home. Whether this means starting something new or returning to an old favourite pastime – there are plenty of ways to unwind and enjoy some time to yourself.

Dive into a good book

Got a book you’ve been meaning to crack open? Maybe a pile of them you’ve been meaning to get started on?  Cold weather (and minimal social obligations) is as good a time as any to enjoy a title you’ve been meaning to dive in on. If you read a lot – you’ll know the drill. For those just starting, it pays to have your choice of warm and cosy beverage on hand.

Pamper yourself

Cold weather can mean dry and cracked skin, lips, cuticles and more – so why not stay in and treat yourself to a spa day at home? Try a new mask, or that bath bomb you haven’t used yet. Taking the time for yourself is something you won’t regret when it comes time to return to the real world.

Re-watch an old favourite movie

Do you have a favourite movie that takes you back? If you can find it online, a quiet day in can be a great time to reconnect with a past favourite while wrapped in blankets and eating popcorn. Movies can be a welcome escape and unlock nostalgic vibes that feel like a whole journey without ever having left the house. Perfect for colder days!

Get crafty with clay

There’s a whole world out there of arts and crafts to enjoy. But if you’re looking for something new to try out, you might love working with clay. Clay is a uniquely satisfying way to get creative. If you live near a studio, you can try working with a pottery wheel, or alternatively, you can enjoy the craft at home with a clay pottery kit you bought online.

Try a new meditation or mindfulness practice

It’s common to feel like you don’t have time to take a breather and practice some meditation and mental stillness. But a quiet winter day is a great time to make a start. Meditation has unmatched benefits for your mental health and sense of wellbeing. If you’re looking to get started, check out our guide to meditation.

Colouring books

Colouring isn’t just for kids! There’s a whole world of colouring books out there made for adults looking for a low-pressure way to unwind. Colouring in mandalas, scenes from nature, or shading up images of your favourite artists – get googling and we know you’ll find a subject you love. Plus, colouring in offers array of mental health benefits, including: brain relaxation and improvements on your sleep, motor skills and focus, all while reducing anxiety and relieving stress.

Cook a new homestyle winter recipe

Winter and the colder months mean hearty and warming stews, soups and slow-cooked delights. Whether you’re expecting a crowd later, or you’re just looking to try something new for yourself, take the time to explore a new recipe and enjoy the process. If you’re looking for something lighter, try going charcuterie style with some cheeses and cured meats to snack on at your leisure. Try something new and bring out your inner-chef with these kitchen tips.
