Digital detox: reclaim your time and energy

In a world where our phones are practically glued to our hands, it's time to talk about the elephant in the room - our digital addiction. Sure, we've all been there, mindlessly scrolling through social media, convincing ourselves we're "staying connected" when in reality, we're just watching cat videos for the umpteenth time. But what if we could use that time for something more, dare we say, rewarding?
The not-so-pretty side of digital time
Let's face it, our digital habits aren't necessarily doing us any favours. Excessive screen time can lead to:
- eye strain
- poor posture (hello, tech neck!), and
- disrupted sleep patterns.
But it's not just physical - constant digital engagement can increase stress levels, reduce our ability to focus, and even impact our mental health.
And let's not forget the FOMO that comes with constantly checking our feeds. Honestly, though? The reality is, you’re probably not missing much.
Four alternatives to doom scrolling
1. Read a book
Remember those? They're like really long tweets bound together. We’re kidding, of course! Books can help you escape the challenges of the day – even if only momentarily. Start by diving into a genre that interests you. Then, if you’re up for it, expand your reading beyond your comfort zone. Joining a book club can help – and it’s a great way to connect in real life, too.
2. Journal
Journaling each day gives you the chance to develop a healthier relationship with stress. It can also help you learn to communicate better and track personal progress. If this has you nodding your head and smiling, check out our article on journaling for mental health and wellness.
3. Take a hike and listen to a podcast
Okay, this doesn’t have to be a hike, but you should get out and get some steps in. While you’re at it, why not learn something new? There are thousands of podcasts out there that cater to every interest. Whether you want relatable relationship advice, tips for managing your finances, or to hear a gripping true crime story - we’re sure you’ll find something that speaks to you.
4. Plan or create
Making plans or setting goals can help you focus on things that matter to you. You might want to plan meals for the week, start a creative project like a book or podcast, or create a fitness plan to stay healthy. These activities give you purpose and help you grow, while also being a better use of time than endless scrolling on your phone.
Practical tips for digital detox
Now, we're not suggesting you throw your phone into the nearest body of water (although, tempting). Here are some realistic ways to cut down on screen time:
Delete apps temporarily - give yourself a break from social media. The world won't end if you don't see your cousin's holiday pics for a week.
Use app usage trackers - most smartphones have built-in tools to monitor your screen time. Prepare to be shocked (and maybe a little ashamed) by switching on notifications for your weekly stats.
Set boundaries - make certain times of day phone-free zones. Your bed should be for sleeping, not for stalking your ex on Instagram.
Finding balance in the digital age
Let's be real - scrolling through your phone can be a great way to decompress after a long day. We're not here to judge. But setting healthy boundaries with our devices can do wonders for our mental health. Start small...
No phones for the first hour after waking up (your emails can wait).
Put the phone away an hour before bedtime – your sleep will thank you. This is one of many ways you can set yourself up for the best sleep ever.
Have phone-free meals. Yes, your food will still taste good even if you don't photograph it. While you’re at it, why not give mindful eating a try?
Reclaiming your time and energy
Remember, the goal isn't to completely eliminate technology from your life - it's about finding a healthy balance. So next time you reach for your phone out of habit, ask yourself: "is this really how I want to spend my time?" Your future self (and your phone battery) will thank you.
