Physiotherapy: Not Just for Injuries

Think physiotherapy is only for people fresh out of surgery or sidelined with crutches? Think again. Physiotherapy isn’t just about fixing injuries, instead it’s about optimising movement, preventing problems, and helping you get the most out of your training.

Whether you’re lifting heavy in the gym, logging kilometres on the track, cycling through your weekend rides, or simply moving through daily life - physio can help you move better, recover faster, and train smarter.

When should you see a physiotherapist?

You don’t have to wait until you’re sidelined. Physiotherapy can be invaluable even before pain or injury becomes a problem. Consider booking a session if you:

  • Notice one side of your body is consistently weaker, tighter, or less stable than the other.
  • Keep picking up small, nagging injuries such as recurring hamstring strains, shoulder niggles, or knee pain.
  • Experience discomfort during certain exercises or activities, for example:
  • Running: knee pain, ITB syndrome, or recurring calf strains.
  • Gym performance: shoulder tightness during overhead lifts, uneven leg strength during squats, or low back discomfort during deadlifts.
  • Feel like you’ve plateaued in strength, speed, or endurance.
  • Want to “future-proof” your body and reduce your risk of long-term injuries.

What actually happens in physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is evidence-based and personalised. At Quay Health, we use VALD technology, the same systems used in elite sport, to measure strength, balance, and movement. This allows us to:

  • Identify asymmetries, such as one leg being weaker than the other or a difference in shoulder mobility.
  • Track progress objectively, so your program is backed by data, not guesswork.
  • Design a rehab or performance plan tailored specifically to you and your goals.

Because we’re located inside Virgin Active Bondi Westfield, your program doesn’t stop in the clinic. We bridge the gap between treatment room and training floor, whether that’s lifting a barbell, cycling on the bike, or using the reformer bed. The goal is making sure your body performs where it matters most.

Do you need a referral?

No referral is required, and you don’t need to be a Virgin Active member. Anyone can book and start working with a physiotherapist.

Real-life examples in action:

  • Gym & weightlifting: low back discomfort during deadlifts, shoulder pain during bench press, or feeling that your progress has plateaued? A physio can assess your mechanics, correct imbalances, and improve performance.
  • Running: knee pain, ITB syndrome, or recurring calf strains? A running assessment can identify technique issues, muscle imbalances, or strength deficits contributing to injury.
  • Everyday life: spending hours sat at your desk or doing heavy lifting at work? Prolonged sitting and repetitive tasks can create postural imbalances that lead to pain. Physiotherapy can address these early, preventing chronic problems.

Whether you’re chasing a personal best, prepping for your next race, or simply want to keep your body moving well, physiotherapy can help you reach your goals by being stronger, smarter, and injury-free.
