7 Reasons Why Barre’s Your New Favourite Exercise Class

by Stephanie Underhill on Tuesday 21 May 2019

Looking to mix up your workout routine and try a fun, new group exercise class? Look no further than Barre.

Barre is a high-energy workout style that combines aspects of ballet, Pilates, dance and fitness techniques. It’s suitable for all experience levels and is an amazing, low-impact workout for your entire body. While it isn’t as intense as a spin or body pump class, you use a traditional ballet barre to balance, flex, stretch and move, all conducted rhythmically to music.

Sometimes you may also use weights, resistance bands and balls to help you target specific muscle areas. Ready to give it a try? Well, kick your shoes off (barre is done barefoot – or in grip socks or ballet slippers if preferred) and see why Barre is about to become your favourite exercise class.

1. IT’S A FULL-ON, FULL BODY WORKOUT

If your muscles are aching at the completion of a Barre class, you’ve done something right! This is a great workout for the entire body, including the arms, thighs, glutes and core. But don’t come expecting a regular core workout. You use the barre for balance while completing a range of exercises that focus on isometric strength training, which means you’re standing still while contracting certain muscles. The result? A sculpted, toned body.

2. IT DOESN’T REQUIRE ANY EXPERIENCE

You don’t need to be a prima ballerina or a Pilates pioneer to enjoy a Barre class. It may take three or four classes for you to fully get the hang of the moves (surprise! You’re using muscles that you never even knew existed!), but stick at it and you’ll start seeing amazing results in eight to ten classes.

3. IT BOOSTS YOUR FLEXIBILITY

In between reps that deeply work your muscles, you recover by stretching your muscles out. Some of these stretches are inspired by yoga techniques. Barre is great for boosting flexibility while also building your core strength.

4. IT IMPROVES YOUR POSTURE

A lot of the moves used in Barre focus on the proper alignment of your spine, hips, shoulders and head. Your instructor will advise you on how to achieve best posture techniques to work your muscles harder and increase flexibility. Core exercises will also build your strength, allowing you to keep a straighter back and improve your overall posture.

5. IT’S SERIOUSLY FUN

“Have I just walked into a fitness class, or a dance party?” – you, after walking into your first Barre class (probably). Barre is about working your muscles and having a great time. Classes include some choreography designed to move your body and ensure you have a blast.

6. IT HAS AMAZING PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS

Studies show that engaging in aerobic or muscle-strengthening activities three to five times per week for 30 to 60 minutes can boost your physical and mental health, and your mood. Aerobic exercise is used through your Barre class, which helps to increase cardiovascular endurance, improve metabolism and burn fat. It can also enhance sleep, reduce stress and improve your overall wellbeing.

7. IT’S ACCESSIBLE

Because Barre is accessible for people of all experience levels, it’s easy for anyone to give it a go. You don’t need fancy equipment or a background in ballet, but the benefits of Barre are truly incredible.
